Observation Narrative
Plot location: boulderfield on upper west slope of High Point Mtn., 1.73 km NNW of Beverly Mill. Marked with a metal tree tag. See form/report for sketch. Rock types present: quartzite boulders. Microtopography is irregular and bouldery.
Large, gnarled, and spreading Quercus montana dominate this upper-slope, quartzite boulderfield in an open stand. Kalmia latifolia, Toxicodendron radicans, and scrambling Vitis aestivalis var. bicolor form locally dense patches in the rather sparse shrub layer. Although a number of herbaceous species are present, the very rocky substrate (nearly 80% exposed boulders and stones) greatly limits cover.
Soil Nutrient Status: low.
No profile development; sol confined to small interstitial pockets; sandy, gray to reddish (very difficult to extract sample).
Physical Analysis: 1% clay, 17% silt, 82% sand.
